Athena SWAN Silver Award
- 1 October 2015
Athena SWAN Silver has been awarded to the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (NDOG) in recognition of their commitment to advancing women's careers in science and medicine in academia.
The Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) set up the Athena SWAN Charter in 2005 and its core principles are centred on the belief that women are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) especially at higher levels, yet scientific research cannot achieve its full potential without the involvement of the whole science community.
The ECU has given out ninety seven awards in total to Institutions across the UK. The Nuffield Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology was one of twenty four departments recognised with a prestigious Athena SWAN Silver Award.
Our commitment to the Athena SWAN ideals was first recognised by a Athena SWAN Bronze Award in September 2013 and since then, we have launched initiatives such as:
- New communication channels (public website, internal email newsletter and intranet to improve information sharing and raise awareness of our achievements)
- Mentor scheme for researchers
- Support for Clinical Lecturers and Research Scientists to apply for Fellowships
- New induction programme to welcome, integrate and support new staff
This is a great result for our Department and our Athena SWAN policies and values will have positive benefits for all staff, irrespective of gender.
