MSc in Clinical Embryology
Welcome to the home page of the Oxford MSc in Clinical Embryology. This one-year, residential, taught MSc aims to provide graduates from either a scientific or clinical background with advanced theoretical and practical understanding of human reproductive biology, embryology, infertility and assisted reproductive technology (ART). We place significant emphasis on providing ‘hands-on’ practical training in a range of laboratory techniques associated with scientific research, clinical diagnosis, or ART, including vitrification, comparative array hybridisation, gamete micromanipulation and infra-red laser biopsy.
Our graduates have secured a range of exciting opportunities across the world. For example, many of our graduates are now studying for higher research degrees (e.g., PhD/DPhil) and pursuing academic or research careers. Others have secured positions as embryologists or work for global fertility companies. Several of our graduates have now begun medical school, either within the UK or overseas. In many cases, our students had already qualified as physicians before they came to Oxford and used our course as a means of specialising in fertility medicine.
The MSc course is based alongside IVI UK in purpose-built premises Winchester House, Oxford Science Park, with dedicated state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. The course, and our teaching staff, has won a variety of teaching excellence awards. In 2016, our Course Director, Dr Kevin Coward, was a finalist in the Royal Society of Biology’s Higher Education Bioscience Teacher of the Year Competition, an award scheme which aims to identify the best teaching talent across the UK.

MSc course book
The ‘Textbook of Clinical Embryology’ was published in the summer of 2013 and is based upon the structure and content of the Oxford MSc in Clinical Embryology.
Chapters were predominantly written by our course lecturers. The book represents a valuable reference manual and revision aid for those working or studying in the field of clinical embryology. Students registered on the MSc course are provided with a complimentary copy of the textbook to help with their studies.
