INTERGROWTH-21st Project Administrator
I graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc degree in Biochemistry, worked for 1 year as a Research Assistant, and obtained my PhD from the University of Manchester in 1979. Based at the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Hope Hospital, Salford, I spent 19 years as a Post-doctoral Research Associate, carrying out biomedical research in the field of endocrinology. Since 1999 I have worked at the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (NDOG), University of Oxford, first as Project Coordinator for the Oxford Endometriosis Gene Study, then as Laboratory Manager and since December 2008, as Administrator of the INTERGROWTH-21st Project, a large, international study of growth and development in health and disease from early pregnancy to infancy, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Research and Employment
A central theme of my research at the University of Manchester was the development and application to clinical studies of reliable and technically simple in vitro bioassays for the hormones, adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH), luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This work was recognised by the Association of Clinical Biochemists through the award of the AMES Medal for my work on the site of action of drugs affecting adrenal steroidogenesis. My attention then focused on ovarian physiology in collaboration with the Assisted Reproduction Unit at Hope Hospital. This work involved a detailed examination of the growth characteristics and steroidogenic function of granulosa-lutein cells and basic studies on the molecular composition of the glycoprotein hormones, LH and FSH.
Between 1999 and 2002, working with Professor Stephen Kennedy, I coordinated the Oxford Endometriosis Gene Study, a major international research study investigating the genetic basis of endometriosis.
My work as Laboratory Manager and Departmental Safety Officer focused on providing the right environment and conditions for the 25-30 researchers in NDOG to carry out their work effectively. The work involved induction of post-doctoral and technical staff and students, training and providing advice on health and safety issues.
My role on the INTERGROWTH-21st Project has been as Administrator. In addition to the financial management and administration of this Project, I am Publications Coordinator and oversee the publication of all the papers arising from the Project. Together with the Co-Principal Investigators, Project Leader, Project Coordinator and other members of the Coordinating Unit, I ensure that the study is progressing smoothly in the 12 participating sites around the world.
